Virat Kohli created history in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 semi-final clash between India and New Zealand at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium by scoring his 50th ODI century. Kohli is the first person to achieve the historical feat in the history of the sport and also broke Sachin Tendulkar’s record of most centuries by a player in ODI cricket history.
Tendulkar had scored 49 centuries in the format, and Kohli had equaled the feat in the league stage clash against South Africa at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata earlier in the tournament. Kohli paid Sachin the ultimate respect by bowing down to the Indian legend, who was sitting in the stands.
Minutes after Kohli’s century, Sachin put out a heartfelt post on social media to congratulate the 35-year-old. The Indian legend recalled a hilarious incident from the time he met Kohli for the first time in the Indian dressing room before stating he could not be happier that he was the one to break the record and called it an icing on the cake that it was at the Wankhede Stadium.
“The first time I met you in the Indian dressing room, you were pranked by other teammates into touching my feet. I couldn’t stop laughing that day. But soon, you touched my heart with your passion and skill. I am so happy that that young boy has grown into a ‘Virat’ player. I couldn’t be happier that an Indian broke my record. And to do it on the biggest stage – in the World Cup Semi-final – and at my home ground is the icing on the cake,” Sachin wrote on X formerly known as Twitter.
Talking about the match, India posted a massive total of 397 on the board, with Shreyas Iyer also scoring a century. Shubman Gill scored a half-century, while KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma played quick-fire knocks.
