Windows 11 is set to provide a more centralized AI assistance to customers, thanks to Microsoft’s new initiative – Windows Copilot. Announced at the Build developer conference, the Windows Copilot is designed to provide a personalized assistance, making the usage of various applications more streamlined and less energy-draining.
Invoking Windows Copilot is as easy as clicking a button on the taskbar. Once open, the Windows Copilot side bar remains consistent across apps, programs and windows, providing a consistent and familiar environment. Windows Copilot takes the much-loved Windows features such as copy/paste, Snap Assist, Snipping Tool, personalization and enhances them, offering an improved user experience.
For instance, users can ask Windows Copilot to rewrite, summarize, or explain their content, in addition to basic copy-paste functions. The aim of Windows Copilot is to cater to a range of questions, from simple queries to more complex issues, making every user a power user. Windows Copilot will begin its preview for Windows 11 users in June.
Extending Copilot to Other Microsoft Products
Apart from Windows 11, other Microsoft products are also set to gain AI integration. Microsoft Store and Bing Chat plugins will get new AI features and experiences. Additionally, GitHub Copilot is set to be integrated into the Windows Terminal, offering developers another platform to interact with AI.
Launched in 2019 and made the default command line experience in Windows 11 in the following year, Windows Terminal supports tabs, panels, and a command line palette that makes it easier to find actions. With the new integration, GitHub Copilot users will be able to use natural language AI for recommending commands, explaining errors, and taking actions within the Terminal application. This is part of an ongoing experiment with GitHub Copilot-powered AI in other developer tools to help streamline tasks.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT iOS application is making its way to a broader audience. After its initial launch in the United States, it has been made accessible in India, and over 30 other countries spanning multiple continents. Expansion followed swiftly, covering European nations such as France, Germany, and Ireland, alongside New Zealand, Nigeria, South Korea, and the United Kingdom. In its first week, the ChatGPT mobile app surpassed half a million downloads, outperforming other AI and chatbot apps as well as key competitors in the U.S.
The ChatGPT app offers user interaction with OpenAI’s generative AI-based chatbot. Free to download, it provides ad-free services, supports voice input via OpenAI’s speech recognition system Whisper, and offers advanced features to ChatGPT Plus users through GPT-4. A subscription-based model is also available, costing $20 per month in the U.S. With a current offering only for iOS, an Android version of the app is under development.

Current speech recognition models cover approximately 100 languages, leaving a majority of the over 7000 spoken languages worldwide without support. The Massively Multilingual Speech (MMS) project, spearheaded by Meta (formerly Facebook), is driving advancements by combining self-supervised learning mechanisms with a novel dataset, thereby extending support to a staggering 1100 languages.

This ambitious endeavor utilizes wav2vec 2.0, a pioneer in self-supervised learning, in concert with a dataset offering both labeled and unlabeled data for an extensive range of languages. The availability of audio recordings of religious texts in a myriad of languages has enabled the collection of an average of 32 hours of data per language, for over 1100 languages. This innovative approach has allowed MMS project models to outperform existing models and expand the coverage of languages tenfold. The research also indicates that these models perform well for both male and female voices and do not show undue bias towards producing more religious language.

By tapping into 500,000 hours of voice data in over 1,400 unique languages, MMS models have managed to reduce the required amount of labeled data considerably. The performance of these models has been tested using benchmark datasets such as FLEURS, and the results have shown promising trends in accuracy. Notably, these models even rival OpenAI’s Whisper, achieving half the word error rate while covering 11 times as many languages. This vast language coverage is further reinforced by the development of speech synthesis systems for over 1100 languages, which is a major leap when compared to existing text-to-speech algorithms that typically rely on single-speaker voice datasets. Ultimately, this progression could pave the way towards a future where a single model can manage multiple speech tasks across all languages.
